The main inspiration for my recent work has been the landscape, light and color of the Hudson River Valley. Living in the area, one feels a sense of connection to the great painters who gravitated to this area in the past to capture the strong contrasts, the brilliant light and dark shadows, the timeless movement of water and sky. I explore these elements abstractly with paint and objects.
Most of my work has a surface which is quite textured by building up paint, and scraping it off repeatedly. I use very little white, resulting in the dense and fiery colors I see during sunsets. Shapes and forms are reduced to the minimum, with emotion shown in brush strokes and line.
The process of the work, and the evolution of each piece, is visible through the scratch marks that reveal colors from the previous surface, or phase that the painting has experienced. I work intuitively, using mixed media, such as oil, wax, pigments, graphite, acrylics, and various supports, such as wood, canvas, metal and paper.
Nature has a profound mystery which continues to fascinate me. I am seeking an essence in it, something that is beneath what is visible, while searching for the right balance of form and content
